Sigur Ros is an Icelandic group whose music has been categorized as post-rock dream pop. There is a specific focus on melody as well as classical elements. Sigur Ros makes use of minimalist sounds that, when combined, create a vast sonic landscape. Lead singer Jonsi Birgisson will often sing in falsetto. They have been making great progress in the U.S. despite the fact they did not release a song in the English language until their latest album (there’s only one English song on this one). Occasionally the singer will even use a made-up language known as Vonlenska (or Hopelandic).
CD REVIEW:
‘Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust’ARTIST: Sigor Ros
LABEL: Beggars XL
REVIEWER RATING: 4.5 out of 5
The group’s latest release is called “Med Sud I EyrumVid Spilum Endalaust,” which translates to “With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly.” It’s Sigur Ros’ fifth studio album and features eleven new tracks. The English-language song is titled “All alright.” “All alright” is definitely one of the best songs on the album and shares a top spot with tracks like “Gobbledigook,” “Inní mér syngur vitleysingur” (Within me a lunatic sings), and “Festival.” “Festival” even makes use of Hopelandic. The album was produced by Flood (also known as Mark Ellis) who has also worked with U2, NIN, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Killers and PJ Harvey.
Sigur Ros continue to grow stylistically and so far, at least according to their fans, they can do no wrong. Every new release from Sigur Ros is something to look forward to. For more information visit the band’s official website at http://www.sigurros.com.
